A small community n South St. Louis County, Affton boasts several historical landmarks such as Grant’s Farm and the Oakland House. Perhaps the most treasured landmark of the community, Grant’s log cabin attracts many visitors. Ulysses S. Grant built it in 1848 on land given to him by his father-in-law. However, the cabin moved several times before finally being brought back to Affton when August Anheuser Busch, Sr. obtained it. Busch restored it to its original condition and today the cabin remains a point of great interest.
Next, the Affton Historical Society purchased Oakland House in 1976 and put it through extensive restoration. Now it has become a showplace in the Affton community and the National Register of Historic Places lists it. Now in the 21st century most of the few remaining farms and landmarks of yesteryear have disappeared. Additionally, actor John Goodman hails from Affton. He attended Affton High School and went to college in Missouri, then pursued his acting career.
