Brentwood is an inner-ring suburb of St. Louis, located in St. Louis County, Missouri. Brentwood (formerly called Maddenville) developed as a prosperous little town on the outskirts of St. Louis, connected by a streetcar line. It developed because of its location on the Manchester Trail, a route mostly frequented by mail coaches and prairie schooners going west. In 1919, the inhabitants of the neighboring Maplewood were planning to elect whether or not annex Maddenville. To avoid annexation and to establish their own school district, the residents decided to incorporate into the village of Brentwood. The rivalry between the two towns still exists today through the neighboring town’s school sports teams and students national test scores. Brentwood High School is a 2006 National Blue Ribbon Award winner, and Mark Twain Elementary School, is a 2009 National Blue Ribbon Award winner.
