Chesterfield is a second-ring western suburb of St. Louis and the largest city in west St. Louis County. The present-day city of Chesterfield comprises of several smaller historical communities. One of the four structures in Chesterfield currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is Governor Bates’ “Thornhill”. Today, Faust Park contains an updated playground, historical village, walking trail, a functional circa-1920 carousel, and the “The Butterfly House”, which opened in 1998. Chesterfield Valley is the location of Spirit of St. Louis Airport, used for corporate aviation, as well as the longest outdoor strip mall in America.
